The New Art
Art Noveau, french for 'the new art'. Art noveau was an international art movement that influenced art, but also architecture, furniture and decoration in the late 19th, early 20th century. Its roots go back to Romanticism, Symbolism and the Arts and Crafts movement. The style was influenced by japenese art in its use of long sweeping curving lines, often called whiplash lines because they curve back and forth. Art Noveau was a fad, it was wiped out quickly by Art Deco following the first world war.
Gustav Klimt (1862 - 1918)
Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter, a co founder of the Vienna Art Nouveau movement(Vienna Succession). Alot of his work is distinguished by mosaic like patterns and use of gold backgrounds. His style seems to be influenced by many different cultural art styles - egyptian, Minoan, Classical greek and Byzantine. Many of his paintings concern the female form, and also themes of sexuality, regeneration, love and death. (image - the Kiss)
I was introduced to Gustav Klimts work while i was visiting my uncle, he showed me a book of his work, and i was really taken by the images. They are just really really beautiful. Some people think art doesnt have to be 'pretty', but i really really like 'pretty' art. I really like his work because i really they are really decorative and stylised, and there is so many different influences in his work. I like the use of colour harmonies and really like the use of gold, it makes them so precious. I have always been drawn to mosaics, so thats other reason i like his work.His paintings are really busy but beautiful. He seems to use both use of pattern and colour in his paintings to create movement.i guess it just opens up another door. That to create movement in a painting, i dont just have to do it through use of colour but it can be done in other ways too.
The use of pattern is very controlled. It would be interesting to contrast movement with pattern or mosaic type imagery (to represent human effort to be free....) with very uncontrolled gestures to represent fluid movement of the birds in the sky.
